What is craniosacral therapy?

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a specialised field of alternative medicine, born from osteopathy, that supports health. Its’ name stems from the craniosacral system – the membranes and fluid that surround the brain and spinal cord – Central Nervous System. CST supports healing of emotional as well as physical pain, trauma, anxiety and the stresses of life.

How it works

CST supports regulation of the nervous system ~ specifically the vagus nerve ~ and allows conditions resulting from stress and trauma to resolve. It enhances the body’s natural healing processes to let go of the negative impact of life’s pressures – mentally, physically and emotionally.

Our bodies are the stories of our lives ~ holding tension and imprints of memories. When a life event feels overwhelming and is more than a person can tolerate at the time, our facia and muscles contract in order to protect us. However, after the event has passed and when unexpressed emotions are repressed, the holding becomes unnecessary and starts to affect our health, causing pain and anxiety, poor posture, headaches and sleep disturbance.

Benefits

Relieving tension and strain from the tissues around the craniosacral system fosters a feeling of calm and improves wellbeing, including digestive, respiratory, circulatory and skeletal systems. It is an effective treatment for helping people with a wide range of health challenges associated with pain and dysfunction.

CST is an effective treatment for newborns and children of all ages. Newborns often carry patterns of birth trauma, resulting in a fussy baby, colic, reflux and muscle strain. A gentle treatment can relieve discomfort and help baby adapt to their new environment.

What To Expect?

When we meet we will discuss the issues you would like to resolve during the treatment. Once ready, you will lie on a massage table where you can relax and allow the treatment to begin.

Using a light touch, I notice the subtle rhythm and pulse of the craniosacral system ~ the fluid that surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord. Through palpation, I discover where tension lies in the system and aim to bring it back into balance.

In the case of someone who is ready to release a traumatic experience, I work with them to notice where the imprint of the memory is held in the body. The client is safely and gently supported in exploring sensations, emotions and memories, freeing their body systems towards wellbeing.

How often should I have a treatment?

As well as calming the nervous system and relieving pain, many clients have regular treatments as a protective measure to encourage a heathy immune system and to clear toxins from their body. Often, people who struggle with ongoing conditions, such as migraine, anxiety, vertigo or hormone related issues, report that regular CST treatments help them to manage their symptoms, leading to a more enjoyable and fulfilling life.
